Mixtape Volume 6
I've been meaning to do an electro mix for ages - years even - but for whatever reason I've never got around to doing it. So, when Jack (aka Hardfur) posted his own electro mix last week I thought two things: 1. Damn! he's beaten me to it and 2. I could do a 'response' mix like Q-Bert and Mixmaster Mike's question and answer sessions or the back and forth of the Roxanne Wars - all very old school.
Being a life-long fan of electro - Herbie Hancock's Rockit was the track that got me interested in music in the first place - I've been collecting the classics and more modern interpretations of the sound ever since I started buying vinyl and never get tired of it.
What I love about it is the optimism and techno aesthetic that underpins all the best electro tracks with their talk of the future, machines and advanced technology. Listening to something by Model500 or Dopplereffekt is like a science-fiction film for your ears.
Perhaps it taps into my passion for computers and anything sci-fi, modernist or minimal but the more music changes and new genres appear electro still sounds like the music machines would make if they could and that's really why I love it.
I spent a long time digging out the tracks I wanted to use for the mix. Some choices were influenced by what Jack had used in his mix and my aim to 'respond' by not using too many of the same artists but also to use old and new so we've got stuff on Metroplex, Fantasy and Direct Beat as well as more modern releases on Interdimensional Transmitions, International Deejay Gigolo Records and Klakson.
